Our Mission and Vision
Mission Statement
The Mission of River Valley Literacy Council, a community service and nonprofit support, is to strengthen communities by empowering the economically disadvantaged, those with learning differences, and adults in general seeking to enhance their literacy skills, with increased opportunity through literacy.
We are guided by the principal that literacy is a right of all people and that those seeking to improve literacy skills will experience an improved quality of life as a result of our free service.
Services Provided
With the increase of a non-English speaking population came the need to expand the types of services provided by the literacy council. We increased our program to include not only reading, but grammar instruction, conversational English, math skills, life skills (i.e. balancing a checkbook, filling out insurance papers and medical information at doctors offices, and how to fill out an application for employment). We offer instruction for obtaining a driver's liscense as well as Citizenship classes.
Our success stories tell us that a person's self worth and confidence increase as he or she gains literacy skills. Education is the key out of poverty and as our student's standard of living improves so do the employment opportunities for that student, thus improving the economic standards of our communities.
